An awful lot has changed in the way that newcomers to the sport of SCUBA diving are taught to dive in recent years. We have always strived to stay at the forefront of the latest equipment and trends, but sometimes the "latest and greatest" is not always the most effective nor is it always what is best for the student diver. The trend for many dive shops and dive instructors seems to be toward quicker courses and less hours of training. The priority for certain training agencies seems to be trying to turn out record numbers of certifications. Less and less emphasis is seemingly being placed on the quality of the education which the diver is receiving. OUR PHILOSOPHY We believe that the most important factor to be considered is NOT the number of divers being trained in any given year, but rather the QUALITY of the diver being trained! In our mind, the priority is NOT to see how fast we can get the new diver through the program, but rather how can we turn out a diver in the end who is both confident in his or her skills and comfortable in the water. The ONLY way in which we can reach this goal is by spending time under water developing the necessary skills. Scuba diving is a very equipment intensive sport. We feel strongly that a critical aspect to becoming proficient with the new skills being learned, is becoming comfortable, from the very start, with the gear and equipment to be used. Whenever possible, we prefer to have our students train in the actual gear which they will be using after the certification process is complete. WHERE TO START? Probably the best place for anyone considering becoming certified to SCUBA dive, is to contact the shop where you are considering obtaining your training. Set up a mutually convenient time to meet face to face with the instructor(s). During the meeting, which could easily last for an hour or more, ask lot's of questions. Find out just exactly what the training course will entail and the specifics of both what will be expected from you as the student and just what is to be expected from the Instructor(s). Any professional SCUBA trainer will have many questions for you to determine your motivations for becoming certified and to find out exactly what type of diving you see yourself doing in the months and years ahead. At the conclusion of the meeting, you should know just exactly how you will be proceeding with the training and just exactly what the costs for the training and any required equipment will be. (CLICK HERE for a link to our OPEN WATER STUDENT/INSTRUCTOR TRAINING AGREEMENT, which clearly lays out all the details of what is expected on behalf of the student and what will be provided by the Instructor(s) doing the training.) If this philosophy makes sense to you, feel free to contact us today to arrange a meeting to sit down together and learn how to safely and comfortably enjoy the beauties and thrills of the UnderWater World ! |
