GILBOA Weekend

Home Up Gilboa Map

With the unavailability of PLUM RUN QUARRY, local divers have regularly been making trips to the northern part of the state to enjoy some of the great diving and camping offered at GILBOA QUARRY.

Over 30 people attended our last trip to GILBOA and we have our order in for another weekend of beautiful weather.

Here are a few snapshots of the last trip:

GILBOA is a beautiful quarry, dedicated to SCUBA divers (No fishing or recreational swimming allowed). It has depths ranging  to as deep as 140', with almost half of the area being less than 40' in depth and LOTS of neat stuff to see EVERYWHERE you turn! It is especially well know for the numbers and great varieties of fish.  They have Largemouth Bass, Small mouth Bass, Rock Bass, Bluegill, Grass Carp, Walleye, Perch, Coy, and even the elusive Paddlefish (aka: Spoonbill Catfish.)  The favorite attraction for many however are the great numbers of huge Rainbow Trout which will eat right out of you hand!

The newest attraction, just added this spring, is an enormous Grumman Gulf Stream Jet Airplane which is just AWESOME! This is an aerial view taken a couple of months ago.  (Click the above link to see lots of other photos of the plane before, during, and after the sinking.)

THE DIRECTIONS:

bulletFrom Portsmouth take Rt. 23 N to Columbus
bulletJust south of Columbus, pick up I-270 W and follow it I-71 North
bulletWatch for the signs for Rt. #315 N and once on it, follow it all the way until it ends. (Rt. 315 is the quickest way which we have found to not only get through Columbus, but also to avoid a bunch of traffic and lights on the north end of town. Rt. 315 will eventually take you out at Rt. 23.)
bulletPick up Rt. 23 N again through DELAWARE, past MARION, UPPER SANDUSKY, all the way to CAREY
bulletAt CAREY, Rt. 23 becomes Rt. 15.  Follow Rt. 15 to FINDLAY
bulletAt FINDLAY, pick up I-75 N for approx 2 miles to EXIT #159
bulletTurn left onto Rt. #224 W
bulletFollow Rt. 224 for approx 14 miles to the town of GILBOA
bulletIn GILBOA, turn left when you see a big huge BULL (That's right, I said bull, it's about 10 ft. tall... that's no bull!)
bulletFollow this road to the next stop light, turn right, and follow this road through town
bulletThe GILBOA QUARRY is on the left, just on the outskirts of town (The entire trip will take approx. 4 hours from Portsmouth)
