PLUM RUN QUARRYNew Scuba Diving Quarry Opens for Business in Adams County Ohio: Expands Opportunities for local diversUnparalleled for easy access to water, beautiful scenery, and underwater visibility. October, 1999 Portsmouth, OH : Of interest to area SCUBA enthusiasts and anyone who loves the outdoors, is the opening of the PLUM RUN QUARRY, located close to Peebles, in Adams County, OH. The site, formerly operated by DAVON, Inc., and prior to that by STANDARD MATERIALS Corp., as a limestone quarry, has been idle for the past 5 years. During this period of inactivity, natural springs and precipitation have combined to create an unbelievably clear lake of approximately 10 acres in size. Located just off of Rt. 73 and beautifully nestled in the rolling hills of rural Adams County, the lake boasts an average depth of 70. The azure blue water maintains underwater visibility of between 30 and 75. Mr. Rob Harris, President of ITS DIVE TIME, INC., a leading SCUBA Sales, Service, and Training Facility in Columbus, Ohio and his partner Dan Shibata are the lease holders and for the PLUM RUN QUARRY. Since their acquisition of the property last fall, Rob and Dan have undertaken many improvements to this new dive site, and many more are scheduled over the next several months. At this time three underwater training platforms have been installed for the convenience of dive instructors and their students using the quarry, and four additional platforms will be completed shortly. Easy access to the water is made available through an 8 wide deck over the surface of the lake, and steps descending into the water. Several hundred mature fish of different species, were introduced into the quarry last fall and are thriving in the clean clear environment. Air fills are available now and NITROX (EAN36) fills as well as the training required to use this popular breathing gas, will be available shortly. Of special interest to divers is the military theme which the quarry is taking on: A Viet Nam era Army Helicopter has been delivered to the waters edge and is being prepared for sinking shortly. Also, a WWII Fighter aircraft has been located, and will be delivered and submerged sometime this summer. A WWII Bomber is also being prepared for its eventual delivery and placement into the clear waters of PLUM RUN. The opening of the PLUM RUN QUARRY is a tremendous benefit to divers, scuba shops, and dive instructors in southern Ohio, northern Kentucky, and western West Virginia which have never had a site of this caliber and close proximity available to them before. Divers have been frequenting PLUM RUN QUARRY all winter long, in spite of the cold! Hours of operation for PLUM RUN QUARRY will be Sat. and Sun. from 9:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m., and most any weekdays by appointment. The fees are $10.00 for certified divers, $3.00 for non-divers, and no charge for Dive Instructors. All of the following will be available by the Spring of 1999:· A total of six 10 X 10 submerged wood training platforms located at depths of 25 · One deep training platform, placed at a depth of 65 over a bottom depth of 80 · Easy walk-in access to water via the 100 long X 8 Wide Above-Water Dock, located over a limestone shelf. · Both air and NITROX (EAN36) fills · Indoor Training Classroom · Indoor Restrooms and Shower Facilities · Picnic Tables/Shelter House at waters edge · Food/Concessions · Camping (Late 1999)
