From time to time, we will take trips westward to enjoy some of the fantastic diving offered at the famous BONNE TERRE MINE in central Missouri. BONNE TERRE (Meaning "Good Earth" in French) is a city approximately 1 hour drive south from St. Louis. It once was home to one of the most productive lead ore mines in the country. But that was all changed in the 1950's, when the mine was shut down and abandoned. At that time, the pumps which were keeping the spring water at bay were turned off. Over the ensuing years, this underground marvel slowly filled with over 1 billion gallons of some of the most clear and clean water on earth. The BONNE TERRE MINE has been called "One Of Americas Top 10 Greatest Adventures" by NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Magazine and has been dived by such notables as the famous Jacques Cousteau. This underground marvel boasts over 100' of visibility in the chilly 58 degree water. Due to the fact that most of the diving is a non-overhead environment, (meaning that while you are diving underground, there is a massive air pocket between the surface of the water and the rock ceiling of the mine) and the fact that the entire underground area is illuminated by over 1/2 million watts of electricity, the mine is totally acceptable for any thick skinned diver, from Open Water rating and above. Plan now to join in the fun. Please contact any of the officers of the SOS for details (or visit the official Deep Earth Diver Web Site for pricing and lodging information. |
